Overview:

Florence Fang Community Farm (FFCF) is seeking motivated Farm Apprentices to join our dynamic team.

FFCF’s apprenticeship program emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage and community empowerment. We incorporate elements of diverse agricultural histories and traditions, ensuring that our interns connect with their roots while learning techniques to grow food. Our program is designed to empower African American young adults and other individuals in helping to eradicate food injustice.

This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sustainable urban agriculture while contributing to our community-centric farm's youth programs and events. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about gardening, education, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

·      Plant Identification & Care:

- Learn to identify a variety of plants and understand their specific care requirements.

- Assist in maintaining the health of plants through proper watering, using drip lines, and seasonal care tasks. 

·      Basic Gardening Skills:

- Participate in routine garden activities such as planting, weeding, and harvesting.

- Gain knowledge in soil management, composting, and sustainable farming practices.

·      Farm Maintenance:

- Support the upkeep of farm infrastructure, including pest and disease control.

- Help maintain a clean and safe environment for all farm activities.

·      Youth Education:

- Assist in educating youth on basic gardening skills, fostering their interest in sustainable agriculture.

- Lead workshops and hands-on activities for students in grades 2-6 as part of our youth program.

·      Community Engagement:

- Participate in monthly community events, including live jazz, storytelling, and farm-to-table cooking.

- Support the coordination and execution of these events, engaging with community members of all ages.

·      Digital Content Creation:

- Contribute to the farm’s YouTube channel by helping with video production on topics such as gardening, farm activities, and educational content.

·      Qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.

- Familiarity with gardening, sustainable agriculture, and community engagement.

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

- Basic technology skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, social media platforms) are preferred.

- Strong communication skills, especially when working with youth and community members.

- Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive attitude towards problem-solving.

- Experience in video production or a willingness to learn is a plus.

Please Note: The hired person must also be present at the farm on Saturdays for food pantry and gardening unless otherwise approved by the supervisor or Executive Director.
