First up was the Heal the Hood community event and meal giveaway (masks-on). Local chefs The Vegan Hood Chef and health advocates Plant-Powered Brothaz came to cook up a vegan storm. Cat Fitness brought their message on the vital importance of an active lifestyle. Speakers from the Black community took to the stage to share their stories about how a plant-based diet changed their lives: Chuck conquered cancer, Tamiko slowed the aging process, and Gerald reversed his asthma, all with the help of healthful food.
The Vegan Hood Chef gave out 300 free vegan meals! And FFCF partnered with Wells Fargo to give plant start kits to every attendee. Kale, tomato, Swiss chard, and lettuce, with fertilizer sticks, seed packs from Whole Foods, and an educational flyer—everything needed to help people start growing and eating their own produce at home. Wells Fargo also helped us purchase veggies from our volunteer farmers and we bundled them up to pass out to families in the community. Best of all, people of all races and ages ended up on the dance floor together in celebration of ending hunger.
We’re continuing our partnership this Friday, 9/25 at the farm from 9 am to noon. We’ll be sharing more freshly grown crops, with an emphasis on supporting food-insecure elderly Chinese Immigrants in the community.
National-local partnerships are the fuel that make this programming possible. Florence Fang Community Farm and Wells Fargo—working together to support communities in need!
